This was never the way I planned, not my intention. I got so brave...
Not into Katy Perry reference? Welp, I tried.

It’s late fall of 2014.
The odds aren’t exactly in my favor.
Hundreds of job and internship applications sent with no response. Even sketchiest companies that everyone supposedly gets calls back from, didn’t call me back either.
Many sleepless nights trying to pull my grades back up.
I can’t help but to think, “I should’ve just gone to college for music and continue to try getting discovered. Did I really have to move to another side of the country for this?”.

Wait, a quick pause.
Please visit the city and the state/province you’ll relocate to before you pack up all your bags. It worked out for me but there’s no guarantee.
Alright, back to the time machine.
But then I remember that I don’t have the voice of Whitney Houston, a supermodel look, or the willingness to starve myself to pursue something I love.
I also remember that I’m on an uncharted road to creating a life where I’m free to pursue everything I want– whether music, love for learning, or being able to sleep in until 10 AM.
So I do what every late millennial does in a crisis.
I go online.
I see Reddit posts, and job ads… And remote freelancing marketplaces.
I continue down the internet rabbit hole to realize… There are a lot of one-off gigs and projects I can take and get paid for it.
Then a question hits my head,
“wouldn’t I be able to make a full time income
if I had enough of these projects?”.

I roll my eyes. I’m only in my second year of university, who’d hire me?! I can’t even land an unpaid internship- so how on earth would I land numerous paid work?
I start thinking about it more… Then I realize that the perks are way too sweet.
If I can create my own work, I don’t need to get up at 7:30AM in a “professional” outfit or makeup. I can create my own schedule and work even while traveling.
And I could even make some income on the side to get me through school. Worst comes to worst, I try to get a 9 to 5 job after I graduate, right?
I saw no downsides whatsoever. So I created my Craigslist, Kijiji, ODesk accounts… Then I start going for it.
(Yes, I picked 9 to 9 life with multiple commitments only to avoid a 9 to 5 with a day job commitment 😂)
Fast forwarding to now...
I can still attest that this is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
I’ve been able to wear all kinds of hats:

Start-up
executive

Corporate trainer /
Consultant

Musician

And even as
a journalist!
So I’ve been able to experience the journey of:
I couldn't have planned this... But it worked.
So I'll continue to see what else is possible.
